Overview
Released in the fall of 2008 the mCX was a huge leap forward in ultra-micro technology. It was also a huge jump in co-axial remote control helicopter technology with respect to cost and durability.
Owners of the then current Blade CX2's immediately noticed a great improvement in crash survivability over the larger CX sibling which would send blades splintering to all corners of a room after even a small encounter with a wall or piece of furniture. The mCX would, in most cases following a crash, be brushed off, quickly inspected, and sent back aloft for more fun.
The first generation mCX ultra micro heli had a 5-n-1 control board that contained the swash servos (for cyclic operation), the electronic speed controllers for the dual main motors, the receiver, and the gyro (that kept the nose of the helicopter pointed where the pilot told it to go). It had a carbon fiber main shaft that transmitted power from its two main coreless motors to the dual, counter rotating main blade sets. Beyond that was only a tail, a set of landing skids, and a battery which made for a tiny little flying machine that was extremely stable and easy to fly.
The heli was controlled by a four channel transmitter. The left stick controlled the vertical speed and the yaw while the right stick was dedicated to cyclic (left/right, front/back).
As of 2011 these helis have been superseded by the mCX2; however, they are still sold new for less money than they originally cost to purchase. Since 100% of their parts can be replaced they qualify as a hobby grade product and therefore they have been used by many for a first step into the remote control helicopter hobby. Beginners can use them to learn the four basic controls of a helicopter while also gaining experience with basic model repairs.
Many other, already advanced, heli pilots have enjoyed owning these little machines as a source of a way to keep connected with flying during cold winter months or hot summer months (depending on where they live) as they can (and should be) flown inside.
Because of its low cost, high durability, and high-degree of fun, the Blade mCX will forever have its place in the RC heli hall of fame as a rule changer … a truly well done product.
