Brand Overview
The Skookum brand from Skookum Robotics of Vancouver, BC, Canada is a line of aftermarket gyroscopic onboard micro-control components for the RC helicopter industry. The brand currently consists of two units: the two axis SK360 and the three axis SK 720.
SK360
The SK360 was Skookum's original product entry into the RC heli flybarless control industry. By incorporating a two axis gyro (pitch and roll) they were able to programatically eliminate the inherent instabilities of small hobby-grade RC helis. Prior to this point in the history of RC helicopter flight, these instabilities had been mechanically controlled through the use of a flybar system. Because mechanical flybar systems have the unwanted side effects of weight and drag, an alternative method has long been researched.
SK720
With their SK720 Skookum pushed technology and the market further by adding a third axis of control to their flybarless controller -- the yaw axis. This new feature eliminated the need for an external tail gyro which had long been the industry method of helping the RC pilot counteract the yaw induced by changing main rotor torque throughout the flight envelope.
